WJH celebrates annual sowing festival

JOWAI: Raid Ialong in West Jaintia Hills District celebrated the annual Nohsakhyriat and Shad Sukra festival at Madan Nohsakhyriat, Ialong village on Sunday.
Jowai North MDC, Marki Mulieh graced the festival as the chief guest. Elders of the Sein Raij Jowai, besides others and former Jowai MLA, Sing Mulieh also witnessed the sowing festival.
The celebration began with a ritual known as Bam Tyngkong which included animal sacrifice besides other rituals performed by U Longdoh- the official priest and his nine elders or the Khynde Wasan.
Nohsakhyriat is a performance of women both young and old. It is a seesaw that swings in circular motion.
Residents of Raid Ialong will also celebrate the Shad Sukra on Monday. Nohsakhyriat and Shad Sukra are sowing festivals and celebrated annually to mark the arrival of sowing season.
