Assam Assembly members take oath

Guwahati: All the 126 members of the newly-elected 14th Assam Assembly on Wednesday took oath of office which was administered by the protem Speaker Phanibhusan Choudhury, a senior legislator of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
The members took oath in varied languages. While majority of them took oath in Assamese language, some took oath on Bengali, English and Hindi. At least two BJP MLAs including first-time MLA and a film actor Angoorlata Deka took oath in Sanskrit.
The members of the Assembly on Wednesday unanimously elected BJP legislator Ranjit Das who represents Sarbhog constituency, as the Speaker of the 14 Assembly.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, some senior ministers and leaders of legislature parties of other political parties while congratulating the new Speaker hoped that he would conduct the House giving equal opportunities of participation to all MLAs from different political parties.
A former officer of Indian Information Service, Das left the government job to join the BJP in Assam in 2005 after being persuaded by senior BJP leader Late Promod Mahajan.
He was first elected to Assam Assembly from Sarbhog constituency in Barpeta district in 2011.
