Police seize illicit liquor from Mawblei

SHILLONG: Though raids are often conducted from time to time against illicit liquor, yet the sale of illicit liquor goes unabated in different parts of the city as on Thursday evening, police personnel of Madanrting police station seized a huge quantity of illicit liquor from Mawblei.
During the raid, the police seized more than 40 bottles of IMFL and 180 litres of country made liquor.
Speaking on the matter, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said that the vulnerable areas in the city where illicit liquor  are sold are Polo Bazar, Demseniong and now Mawblei.
“We conduct raids, arrest them and take them to court,” he said, adding that the excise departments also plays an important role in checking the menace of illicit liquor.
On the other hand,   other police officials said that Mawblei has become a hot spot for illicit liquor since National highway passes through the area.
Police officials also said that the biggest concern at the moment is Demseniong where illicit liquorare sold and the area becomes a walking wine store at night.
The illicit liquor is packed in un-hygienic plastic bags for discrete and hasty transaction and makes it easy for the consumer to pocket it, official informed.
Earlier, there have also been demands from few quarters of the society to legalize sale of illicit liquor to prevent crimes  in the state and the State Government so far has not given a word on it.
