NONGPOH: Continuing their protest against the State government for installing a weighbridge at Nongpoh, the Nongpoh Town Committee and Durbar Shnong Umlyngkdait on Friday held a joint meeting with the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi District and pressure groups including KSU, FKJGP, RBYF, HNYF and the Ri-Bhoi Tourism Development and Environmental Forum at Umlyngkdait.
The joint meeting discussed the impact of the weighbridge on the public and unanimously decided to hold a public rally opposite the DTO office at Nongpoh on July 20 at 11 AM.
The meeting observed that the government was treating Nongpoh as a ‘dustbin’ by installing the weighbridge in the very heart of the town instead of bringing in new schemes for beautification of Nongpoh.
Observations were made that the weighbridge will cause severe hardships to the public and also affect the beauty of Nongpoh.
The pressure groups stated that instead of installing the weighbridge the State government should have fulfilled their previous demands for constructing footpaths and over bridges at select locations in Nongpoh for the safety of pedestrians and school going children.
Later, a delegation of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi met Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner C.P. Gotmare and submitted a memorandum demanding closure of the weighbridge at Nongpoh. A copy of the memorandum will be forwarded to the chief minister, the local representatives and the Transport department.
