TURA: The poor implementation of the centrally sponsored RGGVY scheme in Garo Hills has left in the dark many remote villages under Dadenggre and Tikrikilla blocks which were selected under various plans to have power connectivity either due to incomplete implementation or the failure of the scheme to kick off in some places.
The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) in Tikrikilla who is taking up the issue has written to the Assistant Executive Engineer of the MeECL Sub Station (Re-construction) based at Garobadha informing of the plight of the affected villagers while at the same time urging the official to expedite necessary action for full implementation of the rural electrification scheme.
According to the GSU, villages from the two blocks like Dajugre, Chambalgre, Cheran Songma, Chisikgre, Dinganpara, Rangsagre, Dalbenggre, Balsatgre, Bolbokgre and many others have been badly affected due to the poor implementation of the scheme.
While in some cases villages that were selected to benefit the scheme were left completely untouched, in others, projects that were started has been abandoned with no signs of it ever being resumed.
The GSU also informed that although the implementation of the scheme was completed in some villages the erected power poles were uprooted during last year’s devastating floods leaving the villagers with no source of power.
In its letter, it urged the MeECL to take initiatives to restore power to these villages as well as for the full implementation of the scheme in villages that were earlier left out.
