Public outcry over police assault on school headmaster

TURA: The teachers’ fraternity and the general public of Mahendraganj border town are demanding stern action against a police official who assaulted an elderly school teacher on Thursday evening.
Headmaster of Mahendraganj Centre LP School, Gopal Rajbhar, had arrived at a tea stall on his two wheeler for his evening cup of tea when the circle inspector (CI) of Mahendraganj, J K Chetry, came up and began to assault him alleging that the teacher had not worn his helmet while driving around town.
He also took away the helmet from the teacher asking him to collect it later from the police station.
The same evening another policeman reportedly assaulted a class VIII student who was returning from his tution.
The teachers of Mahendraganj, on Friday, met with the district police chief of South West Garo Hills, Ramesh Singh, demanding stern action against the policemen involved in the two assaults. They also submitted a resolution in this regard with the police chief.
