SHILLONG: The Thadlaskein Lake rejuvenation project, which includes beautification of the lake, is in full swing after clearing all hurdles, said West Jaintia Hills DC Arunkumar Kembhavi.
Different departments like tourism and horticulture, the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority and even locals are together contributing 10 percent to the Rs 1-crore State Government project, informed Kembhavi.
“With the new bypass coming up, the project work, which started earlier this year, once complete, will turn the lake into a favourite tourist destination in the district,” said the DC.
The Thadlaskein Lake, which is a  man-made lake fed by a perennial spring, is around 8km from Jowai on NH-44.
According to a folklore, one Chieftain Sajar Nangli had an irreconcilable difference with the King of Jaintiapur. Not wanting to be blamed for an inevitable bloodbath, he decided to flee from the kingdom with his followers. Before his departure, however, they dug the lake with the ends of bows as a memorial.
The lake is revered by the people of Raid Mukhla who offer sacrifices near the water body.
