KHADC chief PN Syiem not to campaign for party candidates
SHILLONG: The KHADC CEM, P.N Syiem, on Saturday said since the by-poll to the vacant council seats was forced upon the people of the State, he would remain “quiet and calm” without canvassing for the party.
Syiem’s remark comes a day after the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee’s move to take action against him.
The report received by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) was that Syiem was not supporting the official candidates of the party.
However, in his response, Syiem told The Shillong Times: “In the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) coalition in KHADC, there are so many coalition partners fighting the by-polls. It is not a normal election but a man-made one and hence I will stay quiet and calm.”
According to Syiem, the amended Bill on dual posts brought by the State government last year was targeted against him and many were victimised since the dual posts Act was forced upon the legislators by the government leading to their resignations.
“This by-election is the creation of the government and the real issues connected with the election are more important to me than the Congress party. Let anyone win the by-election, but I will remain quiet,” Syiem said.
The KHADC CEM said the people had democratically elected the MDCs in 2014 and gave the mandate to complete the full five years, but the unusual by-election now is not acceptable.
“How will I campaign for the party candidates as the election is untimely and unnatural and not because of genuine reasons,” Syiem asserted.
To a question, the KHADC CEM said he would reply if any show-cause notice is issued to him by MPCC.
