SHILLONG: The East Garo Hills Police has dismissed reports of miscreants in Rongjeng forcing people to sign “power of attorney” to keep aside 30 per cent of the compensation for an upcoming road project in their names as a rumour.
According to East Garo Hills SP Davis NR Marak, the police conducted an inquiry into the matter and found no truth in it.
“The police personnel spoke to villagers after media reports claimed that miscreants were forcing locals to part with their compensation money. However, the villagers said that there were no such threats adding that they had gone to sign the affidavits on their own,” Marak said.
According to reports, miscreants were demanding money from a section of the residents of Rongjeng who would be compensated for parting with their land for an upcoming road project on the new National Highway 62. The SP added that no one has approached the police with any proper complaint.
Asked if people are not approaching police due to the alleged threats, he said that the residents themselves had gone to Tura and signed the affidavit before the magistrate and there are no indications that they have been threatened.
