SHILLONG: In a setback to the UDP, former minister John Anthony Lyngdoh resigned from the party on Tuesday at the party’s circle meeting held at Mawphlang.
Lyngdoh, who joined UDP on September 11, 1997, submitted the resignation letter to party president Donkupar Roy. Lyngdoh was the UDP vice-president. He had won three consecutive terms from 1998 to 2008 from Nongspung constituency.
Though Lyngdoh had held various positions in the party in the past, he was keeping aloof after he lost the 2013 Assembly polls from the delimited Mawphlang to Congress’s Kennedy Khyriem.
In a statement to the media, Kestar Warjri, general secretary of the party’s Mawphlang unit, lauded Lyngdoh’s contribution to the development of the constituency in terms of education, water and healthcare, among others.
Speakers at a meeting held earlier in the day at Mawngap expressed gratitude to Lyngdoh for having served as MLA and MDC for 15 years.
Meanwhile, there are speculations that Lyngdoh may join the BJP, but when contacted, the former minister refused to comment on his future course of action. “I will inform you my future move when the time comes,” he said.
