Agartala: Despite high yielding of food grains, Northeastern states have recorded about 33 per cent deficiency in production, ICAR Director, Northeast Region, Dr S V Ngachan on Tuesday said.
Addressing the fifth annual review meeting of the integrated agro-met advisory service, Dr Ngachan said even though Tripura had recorded highest ever rice production in 2010-11, there was still a deficiency of 23 per cent in supply chain.
Ngachan however, stated that ICAR, Tripura Centre, had started Agro-met Advisory Service (AAS) in 1996 with an aim to minimise the impact of adverse weather on agriculture, fisheries and animal health and to make use of crop-weather relationship to boost production.
“To ensure the efficiency in the service among the farmers, Tripura ICAR has introduced the dissemination of bulletin through SMS in the state, which has emerged to be an effective tool,” Dr Ngachan said, adding that 1000 farmers had been registered for the SMS and more than 3.5 lakh would be receiving the service soon.
Meanwhile, highlighting the future plan Dr K K Singh, scientist, IMD Pune pointed out that ICAR had already become the nodal agency along with IMD to integrate the information on water, energy, bio-diversity and rural livelihood among Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and India to draw the road map in the wake of climate change. “To enhance the weather forecasting among BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), IMD has launch information sharing network on weather data for combating climate change and mitigation,” Dr Singh added.
