SHILLONG: Coal smuggling through the Simsang river was detected by the BSF on Sunday.
A BSF statement said the troops deployed at Baghmara in South Garo Hills seized 19 tonnes of coal and around 500 bamboos, which were being smuggled into Bangladesh from India through the river route.
More cattle, ganja seized
The BSF troops also seized 14 cattle and 10kg of ganja from the bordering areas of Kalaichar in South West Garo Hills while being smuggled into Bangladesh.
The statement said the BSF troops saw some suspicious movement of around five miscreants with cattle and rushed to the spot before the smugglers could succeed in their nefarious activity, but the smugglers ran towards Kalaichar village taking advantage of darkness. The BSF recovered a considerable number of cattle and ganja.
