TURA: School Education Minister Deborah Marak on Monday lauded the contributions of Christian missionaries to education in Garo Hills.
Marak was addressing a gathering at the inaugural ceremony of Fr. E.V George Memorial School at Paham in West Garo Hills.
Late Fr E.V George dedicated his life time of pastoral works for the uplift of minority tribes like the Rabhas, Bodos and other Assamese speaking communities in Garo Hills adjoining Assam.
He started several educational and health centres in the remote areas of Garo Hills where government machinery seldom reached the local people.
“The contribution of the missionaries can never be forgotten in our history. Despite several constraints in manpower and finance missionary schools have succeeded in providing quality education. The results in their schools have proven it,” said Marak.
Expressing concern over the performance in government schools, Marak said, “State-run schools have many facilities but performance is dismal. We are trying to change that picture.”
Bishop of Tura Rt Rev Andrew R Marak who was the guest of honour at the inauguration event expressed confidence the memorial school would do justice in providing quality education to the young students.
“I am confident the new school will provide value-based education to the students of the entire region,” said a confident Bishop Andrew Marak.
