SHILLONG: The Ri-Bhoi Students’ Union has urged the government to set up a government college in the district so that students need not have to migrate to Shillong for better opportunity.
A delegation of the union members met Higher and Technical Education Minister Roshan Warjri on Friday to voice its concerns.
Speaking to reporters, union president Everjoy Nongpluh said, “Even after we have a separate district, there is no sign of a government college. The government must under-stand that there are poor people in the district who cannot afford to go to Shillong .”
The memorandum submitted to the Minister stated that students from Umroi, Umsning and Mawhati spend both time and money on travelling the long distance. Traffic on the national highway is also a concern.
“With the setting up of government colleges, students will get the opportunity to work as labourers during the day and will be able to fend for themselves,” Nongpluh said.
“City life is expensive and this is a major problem that students from poor families face resulting in the increased number of dropouts,” the memorandum stated.
