TURA: East Garo Hills police have recovered over two hundred rounds of live AK-47 ammunition including freshly printed demand notes and receipt books of the banned GNLA outfit after a gun battle with the rebels near Williamnagar town on Monday afternoon.
Police commandos after receiving credible intelligence reports from their sources raided a hideout of the GNLA outfit at Gonggre village, under Williamnagar police station jurisdiction, at around 2 pm in the afternoon.
From the hideout, police recovered as many as 245 live rounds of AK ammunition along with 45 books of demand pads and 28 books of receipt. These demand notes were to be distributed to traders and businessmen alike in the Garo Hills and the receipt notes were to be handed over to those who had paid up to their demands.  However, while the police commando units were returning from the raid armed GNLA rebels laid an ambush at Darimgre village resulting in a heavy exchange of fire. There were no casualties from the police side and additional forces have been pushed further inside the area to flush out the rebels.
The raid comes barely three days after another raid by police in which one GNLA cadre was shot dead and an AK rifle with a pistol were recovered from the encounter site.
