SHILLONG: The BJP on Friday said it would develop a mechanism to provide funds directly to local bodies if it wins the by-polls and strengthen land rights in the State.
The party, which released its manifesto for the December 13 by-polls to the seven KHADC and JHADC seats on Friday, has included primary education policy     in its agenda that says primary education for tribal children should be jointly managed by the District Council and the State government as enshrined in the Sixth Schedule.
Stating that the Congress failed to provide constitutional recognition to traditional bodies, the BJP said if voted to power, it would give due recognition to the Dorbar Shnong and village administrative functionaries.
The party also plans to bring out laws to strengthen people’s rights on land and resources while maintaining that such laws would have provisions to prevent rampant destruction of forests and environment. It vowed to make the Raids and the Himas stakeholders in promoting eco and cultural tourism in the State.
Speaking to media persons after releasing the manifesto, BJP State unit president Shibun Lyngdoh said the party’s main agenda is to ensure that people in rural areas are informed about the various central schemes. He also expressed confidence that BJP would win at least five out of the seven vacant seats.
Lyngdoh also appealed to the people to bear with the demonetisation move as “this will strengthen the economy of the country”.
