JOWAI: A young couple allegedly committed suicide at Satpator village under Amlarem sub-division in West Jaintia Hills on Monday evening.
Sources informed that the couple – Boymi (Boimi) Mulat (19) and Cherish Dkhar (18) – took the extreme step owing to pressure from their families to stay apart despite being married.
Sources said the duo had married some months back but their families wanted them to stay separately as they were still young. However, the couple was unhappy with the decision and chose to end their life.
On Monday they left home at around 4:30 pm and later they were found hanging from a tree with the help of a cloth. The local people informed Amlarem Police at around 7 pm and police rushed to the spot to investigate the matter.
Families of both victims requested for PM exemption which was granted by a magistrate.
