Late-night checks to stop drunken driving

SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Police have started late-night nakas to check drunken driving in preparation for the festive season from Thursday. SP M. Kharkrang said 11 cases of drunken driving were detected and non-FIR cases are being taken against the erring drivers.  In the past, a number of convictions of non-FIR cases have been passed by the court that imposed fine of Rs 5,000 and impounding of the driver’s licence for six months. The licence is then deposited with the district transport officer. Sometimes a jail sentence is also passed.
Police have urged the public not to drink and drive as this not only puts their lives at stake but also jeopardises others’ lives. They have also requested the cooperation of all saying though it may cause inconvenience to them as the same is being done to ensure the safety of the citizens during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
