NONGSTOIN: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the Mawphanlur Water Conclave as part of spring shed initiative programme initiated by the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA), in collaboration with the Soil & Water Conservation Department.
Nongstoin MLA J Jyndiang, Mairang legislator Metbah Lyngdoh, Parliamentary Secretary in charge PWD Roads Cherak W Momin, Secretary PWD (Roads & Building), Bibstar Kharbuli, West Khasi Hills DC S. Kharlyngdoh among others were present on the occasion. The Chief Minister first laid the foundation stone for metalling and blacktopping of the road from Markasa to Mawphanlur (5.22 km) before proceeding to the main programme held at Mawphanlur tourist spot.
On the occasion, Sangma also unveiled a plaque and released the booklet on the Spring Shed Development Initiative.
The foundation stone for the 1 km village road using plastic cell technology under Megha Livelihood and Access to Markets Projects (LAMP) at Umthlong Kharmuti village of West Khasi Hills was also laid by the Chief Minister.
Addressing the gathering Sangma said that livelihood revolves around water, “so the whole development initiative that we have talked about is to ensure livelihood and that is the reason why we have promoted different platforms to ensure convergence in implementation of various programmes to provide sustainable livelihood”.
The chief minister also wanted to ensure that each of the watershed is identified and protected with complete involvement of the people through the spring shed development initiative of the government.
He urged upon all present to partner with the government to protect the watersheds. Sangma also spoke about the upgradation of Markasa Mawphanlur road and he hoped the project would be completed soon.
He assured that Mawphanlur, Nongstoin and Nongkhnum can be among the most sought after tourist spots in the years to come.
