SHILLONG: East Garo Hills police along with Williamnagar Traffic police started ‘Road Safety Week’ on Tuesday.
The awareness programme, which was organised under the supervision of SP Davis N. Marak, was followed by a rally. Auto and tourist taxi drivers and police personnel held posters and banners with road safety messages.
SP Marak, in his address, highlighted the fact that not only drivers are responsible for road safety but pedestrians too should be careful. He told the audience that commuters should not be afraid of helping accident victims.
“Such awareness programme will be held again in the district in collaboration with other district administration and government departments, educational institutions and the general public should take part in creating awareness regarding road safety,” he added.
Williamnagar Traffic Branch, which was set up recently, has done a commendable work as traffic problems and road accidents have reduced significantly.
Among those who participated in the programme were the Principal of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Rev. Matthew of Loyola College, Sisters of Fernando School and members of the Bazar Association. Victor N. Sangma, MPS Deputy S.P. (operations) talked about the importance of following traffic rules to prevent accidents. He emphasised on the importance of avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol.
