TURA: Two police personnel were suspended on Saturday in connection with the police firing in North Garo Hills’ Resubelpara
A departmental probe was also ordered into the incident. The probe headed by Deputy SP V.D.S Rymbai, belonging to the 2nd MLP Battalion, was learnt to have submitted his probe report to the department on Friday which clearly indicted two of its personnel, unarmed branch Sub Inspector W.D. Sangma and Constable Umakanta Rabha.
“Two police personnel who were on duty that night at the check point at Kaldang-Resubelpara Road have been placed under suspension on Friday,” SP Dalton P. Marak told The Shillong Times.
The alleged ‘unprovoked’ firing by security personnel manning the check point on the night of March 6 unleashed a wave of anger against police as civilians resorted to arson on the night of March 6.
“Departmental proceedings are being initiated against the two suspended personnel and stern action will be taken,” said the North Garo Hills SP.
Two fit for discharge
Areca nut trader Tubal A. Sangma and driver of the vehicle Janrak K. Sangma, who were injured in the firing, have been cleared as fit for discharge by a medical team at International Hospital, Guwahati.
Tubal sustained a bullet injury on his stomach while Janrak was hit on the hand.
The third victim, Milseng Sangma, who was critically injured, is recuperating after his surgery, said North Garo Hills district officials.
“Doctors from International Hospital have told us that Milseng is improving fast and with all likelihood could be discharged as early as next week,” said the senior district official from Resubelpara.
