Protest against NGH police firing

TURA: The Solidarity Forum of Garo Hills, comprising several student and social organisations, has announced a two-day dawn-to-dusk protest this week against the Resubelpara police firing that injured three civilians.
Chairman of the Garo Hills State movement Committee (GHSMC), Nikman Ch Marak, on behalf of the agitating groups said the Solidarity Forum, which is spearheading the demand for action against police, will follow non-cooperation on Thursday and Friday.
“The house (of the Solidarity Forum) resolved to call for non-cooperation in the entire Garo Hills region on March 23 and 24 from 5 am to 5 pm,” said Marak in a press communiqué on Monday.
Despite the State government constituting a judicial inquiry team and the state police suspending two commandos who opened fire on the civilian vehicle, the agitating groups are adamant that the district police chief be transferred and the guilty policemen be terminated from service.
The Forum met on March 19.
“The house came to know that the government is adamant in regards to the demand. So it resolved to call a non-cooperation movement,” said Marak.
The Forum has Garo Students’ Union, GHSMC, FKJGP, A’chik Youth Welfare Organization, Federation of A’chik Freedom, Mothers’ Union of Resubelpara and the Labour Union of Resubelpara under its banner.
On the night of March 6, police fired at a civilian vehicle when it did not stop at a check post. The driver and two traders were injured. This triggered mob fury and protesters attacked police and burnt their vehicles on the same night.
