Guwahati:Two insurgents belonging to National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit faction) were killed following an exchange fire with a joint team of Army and Police at Simlagri under Amguri police station of Chirang district on Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Council (BTAC) in the wee hours on Thursday.
The slain militants were identified as Lukash Narzary alias Langfa and David Islary.
Security forces recovered one Insas Rifle with 10 rounds of live ammunition, one 7.65 revolver with three rounds of ammunition and one Chinese grenade from the slain militants, according to information provided by Assam Police Headquarter here.
Security forces claimed that ambush was laid in the area on the basis of specific inputs about movement of militants in the area.
The team observed movement of two suspicious persons in the area.
On being challenged by the security personnel, the suspected militants opened indiscriminate fire on the team. The militants were neutralized in the retaliatory fire.
The NDFB(S) is a proscribed militants group active in Bodoland areas of Assam.
The group has its base in neighbouring Myanmar along with various other North East militant groups including the ULFA (Independent).
Meanwhile, in view of the run up to Namami Brahmaputra Festival that gets underway from Friday in the state, the Indian Army and Assam Police have intensified vigil all over the state.
The President of India, Pranab Kumar Mukherjee is scheduled to declare the festival open in the central function to be held on the bank of mighty Brahmaputra River in Guwahati. Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama too will grace the celebration on April 2 next.
