SHILLONG: The BSF troops at Gujangapara in West Khasi Hills arrested a 40-year-old man for smuggling cattle into Bangladesh.
The man, identified as Rasidul Miya of Tungichar of South West Garo Hills, was trying to smuggle 40 animals.
When questioned, Rasidul said the owner of the cattle was one Joseph Sangma (21) of South West Garo Hills. He also said the cattle were to be handed over to Bangladeshi smugglers who are associated with Sangma.
The BSF said cattle smuggling is still rampant in the border areas and “is destabilising the peace of the villagers living along the border”.
In another incident, BSF troops deployed at Beldova in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya seized 30 cattle while being smuggled into Bangladesh.
The border security force also seized 1,893 bottles of liquor near the Indo-Bangladesh border at Nongzuri in East Khasi Hills. The smuggler escaped.
