Salmanpara police station inaugurated
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has asked law enforcers not to use their power arbitrarily to intimidate common people.
Addressing a gathering at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Salmanpara police station in South West Garo Hills on Friday, Sangma said to ensure rule of law and “create an enabling environment free from fear”, the Government has approved setting up of 18 police stations and upgradation of three outposts.
The Chief Minister had announced setting up 15 police stations and upgrading three existing outposts into police stations in the last budget session.
Of these, nine are in Garo Hills, and two of them being Salmanpara and Damalgre in South West Garo Hills district. Salmanpara will be the first in the series to be inaugurated this year.
Sangma also inaugurated the building from where Salmanpara police station will function temporarily. He made the first entry in the general diary at the temporary establishment.
The Chief Minister urged people to abstain from crimes to ensure speedy process of development.
Home Minister H.D.R Lyngdoh, who was accompanying Sangma, appealed to the police force to respond to the needs of people.
Local MLA and Government Chief Whip W.D Sangma spelt out a number of development projects for the area. He said the Government has approved construction of a district jail and land has been identified for the same.
Additional DGP B.L Buam and Deputy Commissioner C.V.D Diengdoh also spoke on the occasion while district police chief Ramesh Singh stressed on the importance of policing for development.
He said in less than five years the area has seen rapid progress and thanked the people of Salmanpara for their support and cooperation for bringing peace and development.
