Early marriages pose threat to society: Expert

Nongpoh: An awareness programme on child marriage and early pregnancy was organised by Seng Kynthei Upper Nongjri (women body of Upper Nongjri village) at the village’s community hall.
The chief guest of the programme was former president of Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) B.B. Makdoh. “Lack of education and awareness are the main reasons behind child marriage and early pregnancy especially in rural villages of Meghalaya. This in turns has resulted in many broken families.” Dr D.L. Nongrum said. Nongrum who attended the programme, as a resources person also spoke on various health issues which can affect the teenage girls as well as the unborn baby.
Nongrum also stated that early marriages poses a greater threat to the society (keeping in mind that most of the rural villages are socially and economically backward.
The programme was also attended by Wensida Malieh, president of Seng Kynthei Upper Nongjri, R. Shangdiar, president of Umsohlang Nongjri Women’s body, M. Majaw, secretary, Mission Nongjri, R. Nongrum, president, Ummawbuh women body and local headman, B. Nongkseh.
