SHILLONG: The State BJP on Saturday wrote to its national president Amit Shah stressing on the need to have an independent probe into the Raj Bhavan scandal.
State BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh said an independent probe should be initiated by the Central government to unearth the exact reasons which led to the resignation of Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmuganathan.
The letter written by Lyngdoh said the BJP national president can urge the Prime Minister or the President of India for the independent inquiry.
The allegation against the Governor first surfaced after a job aspirant for the post of PRO expressed unhappiness over the ‘inappropriate’ behaviour’ of the Governor.
Following this, as many as 100 Raj Bhavan staff petitioned the Centre to remove him from the post citing various anomalies under him.  “We want to know the truth, and people of the State too feel the same. Only an independent probe can establish whether the allegations are true or not,” he added.
The BJP leader also thanked the Central leadership for advising the Governor to step down.
“This is the greatness of BJP that once serious allegations crop up the persons involved are often advised to step down,” Lyngdoh said.
According to Lyngdoh, if an inquiry is ordered by the Centre, the inquiry committee should go through all the aspects of the matter.
HDR should follow suit
The BJP leader said that in line with the Governor’s resignation, the Chief Minister should advise Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh to step down since his guest house was used for the sex racket and as many as 16 persons involved in the crime are in already in police custody.
“The Home Minister should cooperate with the inquiry after stepping down from the Cabinet,” Lyngdoh said.
