Purohit on complaints: Law will take its course
SHILLONG: Governor of Assam Banwarilal Purohit, who was given additional charge of Meghalaya on Saturday following the resignation of V. Shanmuganathan over misconduct, said that his one agenda for Meghalaya is its all-round development.
Replying to a query about the complaints made by the Raj Bhavan Staff against the former Governor, Purohit said “law will take its own course”.
Speaking to media persons after being administered the oath at Raj Bhavan by Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari on Saturday, Purohit refused to comment on the ugly episode which rocked the Governor’s house recently.
“I don’t know anything (about the incident). Whatever, I heard and saw was through the media,” he said.
When asked how he will restore the dignity and decorum of Governor’s House, Purohit said he will try his level best to follow the one agenda of all-round development of Meghalaya.
Purohit chose to remain silent to questions related to the recent episode where the former Governor was accused of turning Raj Bhavan into a “young ladies’ club”. To a query on whether he will pursue the matter if the staff approached him, the Governor said, “The law will take its own course. Why you are asking me?”
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister R.C Laloo, Home Minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh, Health and Family Welfare Minister Roshan Warjri, Chief Secretary K.S. Kropha and senior government officials attended the swearing in ceremony. Shanmuganathan had resigned on January 26 after nearly 100 members of his staff alleged in a letter to the Prime Minister that he had “compromised the dignity” of the Governor’s House and turned it into a “young ladies’ club”.
Shanmuganathan, who was also given additional charge of Arunachal Pradesh, denied the allegations.
The letter signed by the workers of the Governor’s House listed a series of misdemeanors including sexual misconduct and “torture and humiliation” of officers and staff.
