NONGSTOIN: Protesters blocked the national highway at Shallang in West Khasi Hills on Monday after three drunken police personnel misbehaved with locals and allegedly sexually harassed a woman.
Sources said the incident occurred around 4pm. The three cops harassed people at a tea stall in Shallang market. They also allegedly troubled the woman at the stall.
As a crowd started gathering at the stall, the policemen fled.
As the news spread, more people gathered to protest against the police personnel.
The provisional DSP tried to intervene but the agitators demanded that the three errant cops be handed over to them. The DSP refused to relent to their demand.
This added fuel to the fire and the protesters started pelting stones. The senior police officer and others accompanying him had to flee.
The angry mob also burnt tyres. A source said a magistrate was deployed in Shallang as the situation went out of control.
The source also said law and order was restored around 8pm. The police in Shallang as well as the West Khasi Hills refused to comment on the incident.
