TURA: As residents of Garo Hills suffer due to the indefinite power disruption, burglars are taking advantage of the crisis.
On the first night of the slotted power cut on Friday, thieves broke into a computer shop at Ringrey market and stole goods worth lakhs of rupees. The thieves took 12 laptops, six mobile phones and digital cameras from Karlynsa Enterprise. There was no police patrol.
According to police sources, the last police patrol passing through the area reportedly took place around 10.30 pm, close to two hours before lights went out.
The State Home Department had previously put in place a series of close circuit televisions (CCTVs) at vulnerable points of all important towns in the state, including Tura.
Ringrey market also has a CCTV set operational but police have not divulged any details of the case.
A couple of weeks back, criminals broke into a departmental store in Anandamath locality of Tura bazaar and stole thousands of rupees.
West Garo Hills police chief MGR Kumar said security would be beefed up and more patrolling enforced in vulnerable areas during the period of power cuts in Tura town.
