TURA: The white SUV that was used to kidnap the daughter of two witch-hunt victims of Mrigre village on Monday belongs to a sitting Congress MDC of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, police said.
Three persons from Mrigre attempted to kidnap Ringgat T. Sangma, whose parents and three more relatives were killed by villagers in 2015 for allegedly practising witchcraft, from Waribokgre village.
Last week, Ringgat had approached the government for initiating a fresh probe into the case. Her move was opposed by several villagers at Mrigre. Fearing retaliation, Ringgat decided to leave Mrigre and stay with her husband at Waribokgre.
The vehicle used in the abduction, with registration number ML08 C 8007, belongs to Congress MDC Levastone T. Sangma, the driver of the vehicle informed police during interrogation.
Sangma was elected as an Independent candidate from Jengjal constituency in 2015. He later joined the Congress.
The three men, however, failed in their bid and were arrested on Monday night by a police patrol team. The trio were said to be working at the behest of others with an intention to modify the case.
All three were arrested from Ganol bridge.
Over 60 villagers from Mrigre were found to have played a role in the multiple murders two years ago. Four persons, including the village Nokma, Lind B. Marak, were arrested for the heinous crime. They have since been granted bail.
The accused villagers were alarmed after Ringgat, daughter of Hallen T. Sangma and Bala T. Sangma, demanded that the case be reopened.
