SHILLONG: A concerned citizen petitioned the State Chief Secretary to urge the government to initiate immediate action on the recent National Green Tribunal (NGT) directive on the Myntdu river.
The citizen Sanjay Laloo stated while it was the prime responsibility of the Jowai Municipal Board to cure the illnesses plaguing the Myntdu, but the municipal body itself was a sick unit and near defunct.
He further said that it was wrong on the part of the State Government to assume that the Department of Water Resources, Forest and Environment, Excise, Urban Development, Public Works Department (Road and Bridges) are not responsible for protecting the Myntdu, which is the lifeline of Jowai town.
“Till date the Forest and Environment and Water Resources departments are yet to act on their own orders,” he pointed out adding that the drainage across Jowai town, constructed and maintained by the PWD and others, does not have a single solid waste filtration system and all drains directly open into Myntdu or its tributaries.
