SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Operators Association has accused the State Government of being biased towards the coal laden trucks which are being detained by officials in different parts of the State for violating the load limit.
President of the association, Augustine Shanpru has alleged that while the concerned officials intercept the “overloaded” coal trucks proceeding to Guwahati via 8th Mile in West Jaintia Hills to show their compliance with the NGT order, they allow heavy vehicles carrying cement, limestone etc., to pass through without scrutiny.
“The Meghalaya Government is yet to answer whether the enforcement of secion 194 of MV Act is applicable only to coal laden trucks or to all other categories,” Shanpru said.
“All the Transport (department) authorized weighbridges are run by private parties and the state machineries are helping such parties to extort money from good laden trucks,” Shanpru alleged.
He also said that highly overloaded cement, clinker and limestone trucks easily pass through the government check gates on payment of Rs 2500 to the weighbridge operators at 13th Mile in Ri Bhoi.
