Allegations of encroachment by HM Cements into PWD land

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: HM Cements Limited, a firm engaged in the construction of the new complex at the old Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) premises, is alleged to have encroached into the PWD road.

Sources residing in the area claim that the contractor has put up a barricade outside the original boundary wall and after covering the barricade with tin sheets, started cutting the earth outside the boundary wall which was part of the PWD road.

It is learnt that residents of the area have approached the authorities and pointed out this case but no action has been forthcoming.

Meanwhile, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has clarified that several authorities including Additional Deputy Magistrate (Revenue) and Police have tried to verify the allegations that the contractor has encroached into the PWD road.

“After verification, they have found that there is no encroachment,” she said.

“Actually, the contractor has erected the barricade outside the boundary wall to ensure there is no untoward incident during the construction of the retaining wall,” Ampareen said, while adding that the contractor has taken this precautionary measures since there is a school very close to the area where the construction of the retaining wall is going on.

The Minister, further, added that the contractor would immediately remove the barricade after the construction of the retaining wall is completed.
