NONGSTOIN: The KSU, West Khasi Hills District Unit said that implementation of Aadhaar will have an impact on the minority communities in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills and will allow illegal immigrants to register their names.
John Fisher Nongsiang, President of KSU West Khasi Hills said that the KSU had voiced their concerns on subject earlier and had submitted a memorandum to the then Deputy Commissioner S. Kharlyngdoh to stop the implementation of Aadhaar in the district.
Nongsiang said that the center had already excluded three states including Meghalaya, in which Aadhaar is not mandatory. He said that the Supreme Court had made it clear back in 2015, that the implementation of Aadhaar is voluntary.
According to the press statement issued by the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills, the union will not oppose voluntary Aadhaar enrolment as it is not mandatory and that enrolment of Aadhaar number should be done only in the DC office.
