Guwahati: The Opposition Congress staged a protest at capital Dispur here, alleging that the Prime Minister, who toured the state with a day-long programme on Friday, is in Assam to once again distribute lollypops of false words.
A separate bandh was also called in central Assam’s Raha area against setting of AIIMS at Changsari in Kamrup district.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and MP Ripun Bora led the token protest of the party in Guwahati, in which members of women’s wing, youth wing and student’s wing of the party participated.
The Congress workers stood in protest with lollypops in their hands and placards, saying that the prime minister is here to create false sparkle with big words.
Bora said, “The Prime Minister has come. We have nothing to say about it. But when he starts claiming credit for what was done in Congress regime, we have a problem.”
“The Dhola-Sadiya bridge over Brahmaputra, which he inaugurated today, was allotted and built during Congress rule. They (NDA government) gave finishing touches and are now claiming credit,” he added.
Meanwhile, a bandh was enforced in Raha in central Assam’s Nagaon district since this morning against the Centre’s decision to construct a new AIIMS at Changsari in Kamrup (rural) district of the state, instead of Raha.
Traffic along NH 37 that runs through Raha was disrupted as picketers burnt tyres on the road in the morning hours.
A complete shutdown was observed in Raha and neighbouring areas, though the bandh failed to evoke response in headquarter town of Nagaon.
The people of Raha had been demanding the medical institute at their place, claiming that an expert committee had recommended Raha as the preferred location, but political equations led to its shifting to Changsari. (UNI)
