A unique World Environment Day celebration

SHILLONG: In a unique initiative, school children and teachers brought their own saplings and walked one and a half km uphill to plant the saplings at Lum Umthli, around 50 km from here on Monday.
John F Kharshiing, Chairman, Society for Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge and Practice said, World Environment Day was observed on the theme “Conservation and Regeneration of Biodiversity in the Indigenous, Sacred (Grove) Forest, Community & Village Forest, Clan Forest and Private Forests in Meghalaya”.
144 students drawn from seven schools – Phong Presbyterian LP SSA School, Nongtraw RCLP School, Mawtuli LP SSA School, Kshiad Presbyterian UP School, Kshaid Presbyterian LP School, War St. Mary’s RCLP School and Rangpajun RCLP School from Khatar Shnong area under Raid Diengsaw Hima Sohra, participated in the tree plantation along with their teachers at Lum Umthli, Raid Diengsaw.
Reading materials on preserving the environment and the sacred groves were distributed among the students.
