TURA: The ongoing economic road blockade of National Highway 62 in East Garo Hills through which several hundred coal trucks export the precious material to neighboring states bringing in much needed revenue to the Meghalaya government has only gotten worse with the agitating Garo Students’ Union expanding its night protest onto the daytime.
The student union has called for a complete picketing of all government offices on Tuesday and Wednesday in the district headquarters of Williamnagar.
At the sametime, the GSU has also announced an indefinite economic blockade of the coal trade along NH-62 from November 8th onwards to pressurize the Meghalaya government to appoint a full-fledged principal to the Williamnagar Government College and undertake immediate restoration works of all major roads in the region.
However, the union has exempted all private and commercial vehicles, barring coal trucks, from the purview of the ongoing economic blockade. “Only coal trucks will be prevented from movement,” informed a student union enforcer.The ongoing strike will not be effective during the three day Wangala festival in Garo Hills which begins from 10th to 12th November.
The agitating student union has apparently agreed to relax its strike during the most famous cultural and traditional festival of the Garos.
