SHILLONG: The final detailed project report for the improvement of National Highway -40 between Shillong and Dawki and construction of Dawki bridge under JICA funding is likely to be submitted next month. As per the status report of the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the alignment broadly accepted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in 2015, was modified based on the proposal of a JICA team and the State Government.
In addition, the comments of the State Government are also awaited on the principle approval of the alignment conveyed earlier this year. The 71.2 km road including the construction of the Dawki bridge is expected to come up at a cost of Rs 1330 crore and M/s Transys Consulting Pvt. Ltd is the implementing agency for the project.
The road, apart from providing better connectivity to Dawki, would also be beneficial to trade and commerce with neighbouring Bangladesh. The project proposes to build a four-lane road from Umshyrpi to Mylliem and a two-lane road connecting Dawki and Tamabil. The road, which is slated to take two-and-a-half years to complete after the issuance of tender, will also include a 368-m long and 12.5-m wide bridge in Dawki.
