HC asks panel to ensure cleanliness in two weeks

SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya on Wednesday asked the Supervisory Committee to chalk out and implement proper action plans to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in the city within two weeks.
The Division Bench, while taking up the PIL on the matter, also expressed concern over lack of response from the KHADC secretary to attend the meeting convened by the committee in the past.
The court further said the commissioner and secretary of Urban Affairs, who has been inducted as member of the committee, will be the co-chairman of the panel.
He will chair the meeting in the absence of the chairman who is the chief secretary.
The court also wanted the member-secretary, State Legal Services Authority, Meghalaya, to be the independent co-opted member of the committee, who will attend all the meetings of the and report directly to the Court on every date of hearing. Moreover, it was left open for the committee to co-opt one more member, if necessary.
According to the court, the Supervisory Committee should hold its meetings at least twice a week till the matter is considered again by the court.
The court said till the next date of hearing, the committee will hold its meetings on June 23, 27, 30 and July 4 and every such meeting should ensure that the assigned tasks are duly executed by all members concerned.
If any particular body, organisation, officer or any individual is found not complying, the committee will specify the default as also the defaulter and place the report for consideration before the court on the next date, the order said.
The next date of hearing is on July 6.
