Shillong: The chief secretaries of both Meghalaya and Assam are likely to meet sometimes this month to deliberate on the vexed border dispute between the two neighbours.
Chief Secretary WMS Pariat told The Shillong Times that the meeting is likely to take place within this month. “We are finalizing the date for the meeting,” Pariat added.
Commenting on the claims laid down by the State Government over certain land under dispute, Pariat said, “Our claim is quite strong.”
There are presently twelve areas of difference between the two neighbouring states.
Meanwhile, the delay by the State Government in finding a solution to the long-pending boundary issue with Assam has irked the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
KSU general secretary Hamlet Dohling on Thursday said, “It seems that the Government is taking the issue lightly. The Government should speed up the process as was promised earlier. “So far we have not seen any progress. The Government should be serious about solving the matter,” Dohling added.
The border dispute between the two states took an ugly turn when four Khasi people were shot dead by Assam police personnel in Langpih in May last year.
Soon after the incident, both the states quickly constituted a committee to solve the dispute at the earliest. A Chief Secretary-level committee was also constituted but the committee has, so far, failed to arrive at any solution to the border dispute.
