SHILLONG: The Cabinet will meet soon to take a decision on the GHADC affairs following the governor’s rejection of its recommendation for withdrawal of administrator’s rule in the Council.
An official source said after getting views from the Law Department, the Cabinet will meet to discuss the matter to find a way out of the current impasse.
The governor rejected the Cabinet proposal to withdraw the administrator’s rule since the chairman of the GHADC, who was projected as the next CEM by 15 MDCs had not resigned from his post.
The query of the governor was that how can the chairman of the Council aspire to become CEM without resigning from the current post he is holding.
However, the stand of the government is that the chairman can resign when the election of the CEM is announced after the withdrawal of the administrator’s rule in the GHADC.
The chairman of GHADC, Boston Marak, who has been camping in the city along with his supporting MDCs for many days, cited a parallel on Monday and added that there was an instance in the past when Alphonse Sangma, who was the chairman of the GHADC, was elected as the CEM.
“We are also seeking an appointment with the governor to air our point of view,” Marak said.
According to an official with the District Council Affairs Department, since the matter is currently under the examination of the Law Department, an opinion can be formulated only after receiving inputs from legal experts.
Besides, since the administrator, who is the deputy commissioner of South West Garo Hills, passed the interim GHADC budget only for three months from March 31, the government has to further examine the passing of the budget for the upcoming months.
The administrator’s rule in GHADC came into effect from April 4 and the Council is yet to get a new Executive Committee since the last three months after the collapse of the NPP-led EC of Denang Sangma on March 31.
