SHILLONG: The women’s wing of Hynniewtrep  A’chik National Movement (HANM) has demanded that the state government to provide Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) buses to ferry school students as Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) school bus services are not plying due to the strike called by the corporation staff.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Betty Jyrwa, president of HANM women’s wing, said, “We are giving the government one day only to solve the dilemma of school going students and their parents. We will meet the Transport Minister (HDR Lyngdoh) on Wednesday before we decide on any further course of action.”

Some schools use the MTC bus service in which parents shell Rs 300 per month. The students and parents are in a fix as MTC school bus services have been halted due to the strike called by the staff of the MTC demanding reinstatement of their Managing Director, A Nikhla.

Jyrwa informed that there are 13 numbers of MTC school buses which serves 647 students from different schools mainly from Upper Shillong area.

The HANM women’s wing intended to meet the Transport Minister, HDR Lyngdoh but he was not available.

“We urge the state government to cater the needs of the school going students as they are facing difficulty in the absence of school bus ( from MTC),” Jyrwa said.

The organization also urged the state government to look into the grievances of the MTC workers’ Union.
