After Mawlai, Govt announces ‘Mawpat Block’

SHILLONG: The State Government has announced the creation of a new community and rural development block which is likely to be called Mawpat block.
Speaking to media persons after a meeting on the creation of Mawlai C&RD block at the Main Secretariat here on Thursday, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that Mylliem block will now be divided into Mawlai block and a new block (Mawpat) which will be named based on its location.
Mylliem C&RD block caters to a population of over 3 lakh as per the 2011 census and post the creation of new blocks, Mylliem will have under it around 1.3 lakh people while the new blocks will have a population of around 1.8 lakh.
“The proposed establishments are focused to serve the most vulnerable people,” Sangma told reporters.
The matter pertaining to the creation of new blocks was also reviewed by the chief minister with the officers of the Finance department on Wednesday and the review meeting looked at the resources of the C&RD department.
Sangma recalled that the C&RD department has been given the highest budgetary allocation of around Rs 1600 crore in 2016-17 so that the stakeholders have easy access to government programmes.
When asked about the location of the office for the Mawlai block, Sangma said that people of Mawlai have more or less taken a decision on the matter.
“We will inaugurate the two blocks at the earliest,” Sangma said.
It was also aired that it will be more convenient for the people of Mawdiandiang to be a part of the new block.
Meanwhile, AL Hek, who also attended the meeting, said that the new block is likely to be called Mawpat block.
The meeting was also attended by Nongthymmai MLA Jemino Mawthoh, Mawlai MLA Embhahlang Syiemlieh, Cabinet Ministers, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, Sniawbhalang Dhar and NGOs from Mawlai.
