SHILLONG: The Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO) on Tuesday has sought a Right To Information (RTI) for rape cases and medical certificates of the victim filed in Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and East Khasi Hills.
CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing has stated that the decision to file an RTI came after they received information that there were some cases where the medical certificates of the rape victims has been tampered with while citing a few examples in Jaintia Hills.
“We cannot keep quiet to sensitive issues like rape; it should be ensured that the victims get justice”, Kharshiing said on Tuesday.
“As mentioned by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem on Monday that rape, the serious crime committed against women is on the rise in the state, I think the immediate steps should be taken to curb this menace at the same time punish the culprit as per law”, she added.
There have been instances where the culprits easily get bail because of the weakness in the evidence which is brought to the court.
The organisation has also sought an RTI for a copy of GD entry made for the FIR’s, copy of all charge sheeted cases, present report of all rape cases in the state from January 2010 till date in the above mentioned districts.
They have also sought copy of reports of all rape cases disposed off for lack of evidence in Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and East Khasi Hills from the year 2007 till October 2011.
