Grenades recovered in Assam

Guwahati: In all five grenades were recovered and an ULFA linkman nabbed near Demow in upper Assam’s Sivsagar district on Wednesday. Reports said an ULFA linkman, Trilakya Hazarika, was arrested near Demow by the police earlier today. Based on information extracted from him, police recovered five grenades later. Meanwhile, security measures had been stepped up across the state following a threat by the hardliner faction of the ULFA to target security agencies and politicians, among others. The ULFA faction was reportedly regrouping and recruiting in upper Assam pockets, areas which have been strongholds of the outfit since its formation. (UNI)

HC questions CBI on journo muder case

Guwahati: Gauhati High Court on Wednesday questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to approach the higher courts in journalist Parag Das murder case after a lower court had acquitted the prime accused in the case. A division bench of the High Court set two weeks time for them CBI to answer why it did not move the higher courts. The bench was hearing a petition filed by Parag Das’ family, challenging the lower court’s acquittal of the prime accused. The Court also fixed January 23 as the next date of hearing the case, when hearing shall be conducted for three days in a row on the admissibility of the petition filed seeking the High Court’s intervention. Journalist and human rights activist Das was gunned down in broad daylight on May 16, 1996. (UNI)

Elephant calf rescued

GOALPARA:An elephant calf was rescued by forest personnel from a shallow well in lower Assam’s Goalpara district on Wednesday. The calf had fallen into the well at Santipur village near proposed Bogolamari reserved forest at around 9 pm last night, official sources said today. Its mother spent the entire night near the well but was forced away into the forest this morning by forest personnel who fired eight rounds of fire in the air before launching the rescue efforts. The calf was pulled up with ropes and then moved into the forest, the sources said. (PTI)
