GUWAHATI: Government of Assam has constituted a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to inquire into the brutal murder of All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) president Lafikul Islam by unidentified gunman on Tuesday in Kokrajhar town in western Assam.

The SIT will be headed by Anurag Tangkha, IPS, who has experience of working with the National Ivvestigation Agency, an official source informed here.

The state government has also written to the CBI asking it to take over the investigation into the murder of the ABMSU president.

These decisions came in the wake of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s  meeting with the representatives of ABMSU, All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AMSU) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) at Brahmaputra State Guest House here.

Government of Assam would also provide ex-gratia relief of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of kin of the slain ABMSU leader. An amount of Rs. 50,000 would also be provided to Subhankar Chakraborty who also received bullet injury in the incident and the state government would bear all his medical expenses.

Sonowal also informed the organisatios  that he would take detail report from DGP Mukesh Sahay regarding the killing of Lafikul Islam. The DGP was  rushed to Kokrajhar after the incident took place. Condemning the murder of the ABMSU president, the Chief Minister stated that state government would not tolerate any such incident and appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

Reiterating state government’s commitment for ensuring safety and security of the people of Assam, Chief Minister Sonowal said that government would leave no stone unturned to nab the culprits. He also sought cooperation from the people in this regard.

BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary stated that BTAD administration would take appropriate steps for employment of the family member of Lafikul Islam in consultation with ABMSU and AMSU.

The state government for the time being has ignored the vociferous demand for action against the Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police over the murder. An official source informed that the SP was unlikely to be included in the SIT to probe into the killing of the ABMSU leader.
