SHILLONG: The state Congress on Wednesday targeted BJP and its ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement in the city on Wednesday.
P.T Sawkmie, vice president of Shillong City Congress Committee, said the saffron party made false promises of creating two crore jobs, giving Rs 15 lakh in every citizen’s account and crude oil prices, among others.
Richard Marak, president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, went back in history while denouncing RSS and BJP. “The RSS and the Hindutva camp not only opposed Quit India Movement but also supported Britishers in suppressing it. The RSS and Hindu Mahasabha deliberately stayed away from India’s Freedom Struggle and opposed the Quit India Movement while Congress leaders and workers sacrificed and many gave up their lives for the movement,” he said.
He also went on to speak about the demonetization, which he described as the biggest scam of all times, and Narendra Modi’s false promises.
After the programme black paint was sprayed on the photographs of Modi and BJP president Amit Shah as a mark of protest condemning the attack on Rahul Gandhi’s convoy in Gujarat which neither the Prime Minister nor his ministers and BJP leaders condemned.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee celebrated the Foundation Day of the Indian Youth Congress at Congress Bhawan here on Wednesday.
The programme, which started with hoisting of Indian Youth Congress flag and it was chaired by MLA A.L Hek, vice president, MPCC, also observed the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement in collaboration with the Shillong City Congress Committee.
IYC Foundation Day was also observed in every district in the State.
Sawkmie spoke about the 1942 Quit India movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and the freedom struggle led by the Congress party and its leaders. He also praised the Congress Government under the leadership of Mukul Sangma and highlighted the achievements of the UPA and the MUA Government.
