State Women’s Commission reconstituted

By Our Special Correspondent

SHILLONG: The State Women’s Commission has been reconstituted with Ms Roshan Warjri as the Chairperson, informed Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday.

Other members include Ms Meena Kharkongor, advocate, Ms Wimon Tariang, Ms Angela R Ingty from Tura and Ms Gamchi G Marak of Williamnagar.

On being told that the former two Commissions suffered from funds constraints and could not carry out their mandate effectively, Dr Sangma said, “Funds are never a constraint. We will ensure that the SWC gets its due share of funds depending on the budget proposals.”

Meanwhile attempts to contact the new Chairperson Roshan Warjri failed as she is abroad. It is learnt that Warjri is attending a meeting in Mexico and will later travel to the US.

Meanwhile, reliable sources informed that Warjri did not feature in the list of members proposed for the new body which was recommended by the Social Welfare department to the Government.

Sources say Warjri’s appointment is an attempt at pre-empting her from contesting the next election against the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee(MPCC)president Friday Lyngdoh from Shillong North constituency in the upcoming 2013 Assembly election.

Earlier, it was reported that the MPCC president had assured Warjri that he would vacate the seat for her.

Warjri even left the UDP to join the Congress on this promise from the Congress.

But lately the MPCC president has reneged from his commitment and is all set to contest the next election.

Meanwhile, reliable sources revealed that the Social Welfare department had actually recommended former Shillong College principal Dr MPR Lyngdoh to head the women’s commission.

It may be remained that Roshan Warjri is already holding office as Chairperson, Meghalaya Co-operative Apex Bank (MCAB).
