SHILLONG: The district magistrate of East Khasi Hills will meet the Dorbar Shnong, Madan Iing Mylliem and the Seng Khasi, after the celebration of Independence Day.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar said, “After learning about the conflict, the district magistrate will call the two parties to find out about the cause of the conflict and to find a solution.”
He added that no complaints have been received so far from both the parties.
Earlier, the Dorbar Shong, Madan Iing Mylliem took to the streets carrying placards and shouting slogans on Friday to prevent the funeral ceremonial rites of a Seng Khasi elder, Kulam Nongrum from being performed.
Meanwhile, the Seng Khasi, central body, Mawkhar has condemned the Dorbar Shnong and residents of Madan Iing Syiem, Mylliem, for preventing the relatives of Seng Khasi elder Kulam Nongrum, to perform his last rites.
“The Seng Khasi does not to criticise anything about the incident but the matter could have been resolved through dialogue based on humanitarian grounds,” it said in a statement.
The Seng Khasi also lambasted the school authorities for sending their students to come out on the streets and oppose the funeral rites.
The Seng Khasi asked the state government authorities in charge of the education department to seek an explanation from the school as to why it sent its students to protest. “Such acts instil hatred and intolerance in the students,” it said.
The Seng Khasi urged all its branches to unite against forces trying to disrupt its ethos.
